Strictly success at wheelchair dance duo’s comeback
A British wheelchair dance duo have given the nation – and Fish Insurance – even more reasons to be proud after impressing judges at two major international competitions.
Gary Lyness and Paula Moulton, better known as Strictly Wheels, represented Great Britain at the IPC Mainhatten Cup in Frankfurt and the IPC Suomi Open Championship in Helsinki.
The competitions marked their big comeback following almost a year out from the sport due to injury and illness, but the couple had no reason to be nervous about their return to the dancefloor.
In Helsinki the duo, who are sponsored by Fish Insurance, placed 5th in the Latin Combi 2 final while Paula missed out on the Single Ladies final by just one point, placing 7th.
Paula said: “We danced well for our first competition of the year and we’re really pleased with our performance. The event was well organised and all credit goes to Finland for hosting such a major event for the first time. The floor was a joy to dance on!”
Just a few weeks later, Gary and Paula were back in action at the IPC Mainhatten Cup in Germany, where dancers from over 15 countries were in attendance.
In the Latin Combi 2 competition the team placed a respectable 8th place in a strong follow-up to their success in Finland. It means Gary and Paula are now ranked 7th in Europe and 9th in the World in Latin Combi 2 – a fantastic achievement for Great Britain half way through the competition season.
Paula also reached the semi-finals in the Single Ladies, now ranking 14th in the world and 11th in Europe.
Gary said: “We thoroughly enjoyed the competition and thanks to our hosts for another fantastic event. We’re enjoying being back on the floor and looking forward to the season ahead. We’re also grateful to Fish Insurance for the continued support.”
Paula and Gary are now preparing for the European Championships which are being held in Slovakia in October.
