Key benefits at a glance*
- Up to £10 million Employers’ Liability
provides cover in the event that your carer makes a claim for compensation because of an injury or illness caused while they are delivering support duties to you. It doesn’t cover claims from a carer if they are named on the policy as the employer and/or for injury when the policyholder is not judged to be at fault.
- Up to £10 million Public Liability
provides cover for bodily injury to other people or property belonging to others. It does not cover personal property damage or bodily injury to you.
- Up to £4,000 Carer Redundancy
covers the cost of statutory redundancy and notice to employees if you go into full time residential or nursing care, pass away or if you are told that funds have been reduced or withdrawn. It doesn’t cover you if the redundancy is voluntary or you intend to re-employ the person being made redundant. Advice must be taken from our Employment Law specialist Peninsula before any action is taken against an employee.
- Legal Costs & Expenses
Cover relating to employment claims brought against you. The insurance pays towards the cost of defending employment claims brought against you by the employee or former employee in a Civil Court or Employment Tribunal up to £200,000 per claim and up to £2m in any policy year. The policy excludes cover for employment claims arising from an event if you haven’t taken, and followed, the advice provided by our Employment Law specialist, Peninsula.
- Up to £1,250 Additional Carer Costs
If your carer is injured at work, the policy will pay towards any increased care costs. It does not cover the first 7 days following the injury.

We’ve answered some of the questions you may have about our Care Protect Insurance
-
QWhat happens if my carer is accidentally injured while carrying out their support duties?
AOur policy will pay towards the additional costs for temporarily replacing your employee. For example, any increased salary costs for an agency carer versus your full-time employee.
-
QWhat if I have to make my employee redundant? Am I covered?
AOur policy covers the costs of statutory redundancy & notice to employees if Local Authority funding is reduced/withdrawn, or the person receiving care goes into full time residential care or passes away.
-
QWho can I contact if I am unsure about my rights and responsibilities as an employer?
AWith Fish Insurance’s Care Protect policy, you get 24/7 support from an employment law and health and safety helpline.
-
QMy carer is self-employed. Do I need to take out Insurance?
AAs you are not your carer’s employer, you do not need the Employers’ Liability insurance included with our policies. This is often the case with agency staff. However, when contracts, payment or tasks and hours are set by you they can become deemed a worker or an employee, which then requires you to have valid Employers’ Liability insurance. Guidance on when your self-employed carer becomes your employee can be found here: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/work/check-your-employment-status/

QDo I need Care Protect Insurance if I employ a carer?
AYes, if you employ a carer or personal assistant it is a legal requirement to have employers’ liability insurance. This is included with our Care Protect Insurance.
