Mobility Scooter Winter Storage
As the days grow shorter and nights stretch longer you might potentially be using your mobility scooter less and even storing it away for the winter.
Storing a mobility scooter properly during the winter months helps to maintain its longevity and ensure it operates smoothly when you need it again. Here are some key tips for winter storage of a mobility scooter:
1. Clean the Scooter Thoroughly
Remove dirt and debris: Wipe down all parts of the scooter, especially the underside, to remove mud, dirt, and grime that may have accumulated. This helps prevent rust and corrosion.
Dry thoroughly: Ensure the scooter is completely dry before storing it to avoid moisture buildup, which can lead to rust.
2. Battery Care
Charge the battery: Fully charge the battery before storage to keep it in optimal condition.
Disconnect the battery: If possible, disconnect the battery to prevent any drain. If you’re storing the scooter for a long period, consider charging the battery at least once a month to maintain its health.
Store in a cool, dry place: Batteries should not be exposed to extreme cold or heat. Storing them indoors at room temperature is ideal.
3. Tyre Maintenance
Inflate the tires: Ensure the tires are properly inflated to the recommended pressure before storing the scooter to prevent flat spots from forming.
Elevate the scooter: If possible, place the scooter on blocks or stands to keep the tires off the ground, reducing pressure on them and preventing flats.
4. Cover the Scooter
Use a protective cover: Invest in a breathable, waterproof cover to protect the scooter from dust, moisture, and debris during storage. Avoid using plastic sheets that trap moisture, as this can lead to corrosion.
Indoor vs. Outdoor storage: If storing the scooter outdoors, make sure it’s under a shelter and well-covered. Indoor storage (such as a garage or shed) is preferable to avoid harsh weather conditions.
5. Store in a Dry, Temperature-Controlled Environment
Keep the scooter in a dry place with stable temperatures, ideally avoiding locations where it will be exposed to freezing temperatures or excessive humidity, which could damage both the electronics and mechanical parts.
6. Inspect the Scooter Before Use
After winter storage, check for any signs of rust, flat tires, or electrical issues before using the scooter again. Test the battery and give the scooter a light test run to ensure everything is functioning properly.
7. Lubrication and Maintenance
Lubricate moving parts: Apply light lubrication to parts such as axles, brake levers, and suspension to prevent rust and keep them functioning smoothly.
Check for loose parts: Before storing, check for loose bolts, screws, and connections. Tighten any that may have come loose over time.
Following these tips will help ensure your mobility scooter remains in good working condition, even after being stored through the winter months.
