NHS Wheelchair Insurance from Fish Insurance
Our NHS Wheelchair cover is designed to meet the needs of those looking to insure their Personal Wheelchair Budget funded manual or powered wheelchair and protect themselves against third-party liability claims, with the option to include loss or damage cover.
We offer policies tailored towards both manual and powered wheelchairs, with all policies including third-party liability cover, worldwide cover, and either recovery costs or a breakdown recovery service.
Choosing a policy
We offer three levels of cover, so you can choose the policy that meets your needs.
NHS Powered Plus
If the Personal Wheelchair Budget you receive has
been arranged on the basis that it’s you, rather than
the NHS, who is personally responsible for any
loss or damage to your powerchair.
NHS Powered Basic
If the Personal Wheelchair Budget you receive covers
any loss or damage caused to your powerchair, and
you only require cover for third party liability and
breakdown recovery.
NHS Manual
If the Personal Wheelchair Budget you receive is
for a manual wheelchair.
For limitations and exclusions, please refer to the Insurance Product Information Documents (IPIDs)

Still got questions?
We’ve answered some of the queries you might have about our NHS Wheelchair Insurance
-
QDo I have to insure my NHS wheelchair?
AIt is not a legal requirement to insure your wheelchair. However it could be wise to pay the small amount for insurance as accidents involving wheelchairs can result in expensive liability claims.
-
QDo you provide me with the funds to hire a wheelchair whilst my NHS one is being repaired?
AYes, if you have an NHS Manual or NHS Powered Plus policy. The cover on both of these policies means that if your wheelchair has been out of use for a week we will cover the cost of hiring alternative equipment. In the event of a valid claim resulting in your NHS wheelchair requiring repair or replacement, we will pay (subject to prior approval) up to £5 per day towards the cost of hiring a similar wheelchair. The maximum total benefit payable in any one year is £100 (inc. VAT). This cover is not available on NHS Powered Basic policies.
-
QDoes this policy cover accidental damage to my NHS wheelchair?
AYes. Both NHS Manual and NHS Powered Plus policyholders benefit from cover against accidental damage (including fire and flood), theft, and vandalism. This cover is not included in NHS Powered Basic policies.
-
QIf someone else uses my wheelchair are they covered?
AYes. The insurance policy covers the wheelchair and anyone who uses it with your permission.
-
QIs my wheelchair covered if I go on holiday abroad?
AYes, your wheelchair is covered worldwide for up to 21 days. Third Party Liability cover in USA & Canada is excluded.
