Nearly 1 million people in the UK are living with an emphysema diagnosis and having a pre-existing medical condition might find it harder getting travel insurance. Specialist travel insurance providers such as AllClear can work with you to arrange suitable cover for you and your condition.
What is emphysema?
Emphysema is a pulmonary condition in which breathing is affected following damage to the alveoli, air sacs which process inhaled air to supply oxygen to the blood and return carbon dioxide to the lungs. When the alveoli are weakened or ruptured this process is impaired causing shortness of breath, coughing and production of phlegm. Emphysema falls under the umbrella of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and those diagnosed with it may also suffer from other COPD conditions such as chronic bronchitis.
Do I need to declare emphysema as a pre-existing medical condition when buying travel insurance?
Yes. Emphysema is a serious disease and once you have a diagnosis you must declare it as a pre existing health condition. Bear in mind that high altitude, pollution and low oxygen levels (such as in aircraft cabins) can exacerbate symptoms so it is important you have effective travel insurance. If you don’t declare your condition your policy may be invalid and should you fall ill you may need meet emergency medical and associated costs such as an air ambulance.
Will having emphysema prevent me from getting travel insurance?
Because emphysema is a chronic condition you are protected by disability legislation which makes it illegal for insurers to refuse you cover. That does not mean though that they cannot charge you more or place specific restrictions upon your cover. As a company that specialise in disability insurance, AllClear is experienced in sourcing highly competitive travel insurance for people with chronic health conditions, including emphysema and other COPD disorders.
Information and support for people with emphysema
