If you have had Cancer and need travel insurance, we may be able to help!
Remember
- Tell your insurer about any pre-existing medical conditions to make sure you’re fully covered
- Consider covering everyone travelling in your party in case you have to cancel
- Take a copy of your travel insurance documents with you
If you’re affected by cancer it can make it difficult for you to find appropriate travel insurance or, if you are offered cover, you might find the premiums expensive. It is an issue that has been widely reported after the charity Macmillan Cancer Support found that nearly 40% of people affected by cancer were quoted higher premiums with some refused.
Cancer is not covered by many mass market travel insurance policies but you’ll find AllClear Travel Insurance can arrange cover for people who are suffering or are in remission from various forms of the disease, such as breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer and bowel cancer.
What is cancer?
Cancer is an invasive disease which attacks body tissue and organs when cells grow and reproduce at an abnormal rate. The last available statistics published by Cancer Research show that over 330,000 people in the UK were diagnosed with one of over 200 different types of cancer. Whilst the variety of cancers and allied symptoms, treatments and recovery rates is wide, over half of all diagnoses are for the four most types – breast, lung, prostate and bowel cancer.
Do I need to declare cancer as a pre-existing medical condition when buying travel insurance?
Yes. As with any pre existing health condition if you do not advise your insurer when getting a travel insurance quote then your cover may be invalid and a claim may be refused. Be open an honest and declare even if you have been in remission for some time.
Will having cancer prevent me from getting travel insurance?
It shouldn’t prevent you getting cover because legally insurers cannot refuse you if you have a disability, with the definition of disability embracing medical conditions like cancer. They can though impose conditions or charge you more. As a company specialising in travel insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions and/or disabilities, AllClear Insurance can offer appropriate and competitively priced European Worldwide, single trip and annual travel insurance policies.
Information and support for people with cancer
Macmillan Cancer Research publishes a dedicated guide for people affected by cancer called Getting Travel Insurance whilst the NHS website provide an excellent overview of the disease, its signs, symptoms and risk factors.

We’ve answered some of the questions you may have about Travel Insurance
-
QIs it safe to travel by air with cancer?
AYes, many people with cancer are perfectly okay to travel abroad. We’d recommend, before booking your trip, consulting with your GP to check that you’re fit to fly. If you need to bring extra luggage, most airports have services that will help you to transport your luggage around the airport, but make sure to let them know you’re coming in advance. It’s important to let the airline know about your cancer so they can be prepared for your arrival and ensure they are prepared to carry out emergency medical treatment during the flight if necessary.
