What is angioplasty?

Coronary angioplasty is a common procedure which addresses the symptoms of heart disease caused by the narrowing or hardening of a coronary artery or arteries. Most angioplasties involving the insertion a wire mesh (or ‘stent’) to widen the affected artery at the point it is narrowed. Angioplasty is a very common procedure which can be carried out without a general anaesthetic by inserting of a catheter through which a balloon or stent is guided to the narrowing. Then the balloon is inflated to either squash the fatty deposits that are restricting blood flow or to correctly place the stent.

Do I need to declare if I have undergone angioplasty when buying travel insurance?

Yes, because if you have had an angioplasty this indicates you have a pre-existing medical condition such as angina or coronary heart disease. Whilst it may be tempting not to fully disclose any health conditions you have in the hoping of getting cheap travel insurance, remember that cheap isn’t necessary good value. If you do not advise your insurer of your pre-existing medical issues then your insurer may refuse to settle the cost of any related claim you may make whilst travelling abroad. This in turn could leave you liable for any treatment or medical repatriation costs.

Will having an angioplasty prevent me from getting travel insurance?

Having angioplasty won’t prevent you from getting travel insurance although you’ll find a lot of policies will not cover the underlying medical conditions which lead to you undergoing the procedure. However, as a company specialising in travel insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions AllClear is able to secure appropriate and competitively priced travel insurance to cover a range of cardiac illnesses.
